TEBACO draws on the inherent cultural sensibilities of Kyoto to discover richly stimulating ways of living today. Originating at the department store JR Kyoto Isetan, TEBACO now makes its first appearance in Gion. For a special limited period, GION TEBACO unfolds inside the two spaces of the ZEN Building, home to ZEN CAFE, Kou Koto, PONTE, and Kawamuro-sen, and nearby Ku Kagiya.
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the treaty of friend-ship between Kyoto and Paris. In keeping with the concurrent Nuit Blanche Kyoto 2018, which is held to deepen relations be-tween the two cities, this Gion TEBACO event likewise explores the theme of blanche (white). Leading figures from the crafts and traditional culture long cultivated throughout the histories of Kyoto and Paris come together here and provide mutual inspira-tion for each other' s expressions of blanche. Ahead of the opening of the refurbished food floor at JR Kyoto Isetan in November and December, new arrivals on the floor also present their offerings. See, touch, smell, hear, taste... Two unique weeks that are a delight for all the senses!
Sohitsu Hachiya, master designate of the Shino School, which has carried on the koh-do incense ceremony tradition for over 500 years since the Muromachi period, has created special neri-ko (kneaded incense) on the theme of nuit blanche (white night). It is available to buy wrapped in Kamisoe paper. Items on sale include incense burners and utensils by the artisans of leather brand Kawamuro-sen and glassware store PONTE, supervised by Hachiya. On the actual day of Nuit Blanche Kyoto, there is a lecture on fragrance appreciation (reservation required).
Kamisoe, which has continued to pass on the crafts of Mkarakami Chinese paper since the Heian period to the present, partners with Antoinette Poisson, which has produced domino paper in Paris in a traditional style since the 18th century. Visitors can view and purchase the results of this unique collaboration. Accessories by Kanae Matsuura of the brand kanae, which breathes fresh innovation into intricately beautiful handmade parts from Paris, are on exhibit. Other highlights include Japonism-influenced vases by art nouveau pioneerÉmile Gallématched with flower arrangement of wild flowers by Kyoto-basd Akihiko Oguro, alongside various other vibrant products and items by the likes of Kawamuro-sen, PONTE, and Somenotsukasa Yoshioka, a textile-dyeing brand whose history goes back to the Edo period.
Ahead of the reopening of the food floor at JR Kyoto Isetan, two French confectionary brands, La Sablésienne and La maison JOUVAUD, join champagne house CHAMPAGNE By Fernand in the lineup. Exclusive higashi sweets by established Kyoto confectioner Kagizen Yoshifusa using mockups inspired by Antoinette Poisson domino paper are also on sale. Between October 5 and October 7, including the actual night of Nuit Blanche Kyoto, visitors can enjoy a party and aperitif tasting session (reservation required). The food menu is supervised by Kyoto-based, international chef Masayo Funakoshi, complemented by champagne served by the Kyoto bar Shuto Yanagino. Enjoy communication through food.
From artist-led workshops to a talk event by Sachio Yoshioka (fifth-generation head of Somenotsukasa Yoshioka) and Kiri Ishizawa (head of culture salon Petit Cenacle), a wide range of events provide opportunities to come into contact with aspects of culture in both Kyoto and France.
